- SHIRLEY BAKER Punks 1980s
Shirley Baker (1932-2014) was a British photographer known for her street photography of working-class life in Manchester during the 1960's. In the early 1980's work took her to London, where she photographed punks around Camden Market, N.London. My favourite here is the lad sat against a wall reading the foldout sleeve of "Yes Sir, I Will"
- JANETTE BECKMAN Raw Punk Streets UK 1979-1982
British-born photographer Janette Beckman began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for music magazines The Face and Melody Maker. She shot bands including the Clash, the Specials, Boy George and the Jam as well as three Police album covers, moving to NYC in 1983 where she photographed pioneers such as Run DMC, Slick Rick, Salt-N-Pepa, Grand Master Flash and more.
Great photos of punks, skins and rudeboys/girls, with the majority being of punks, particularly from the Kings Road and the 1980 Sid Vicious march in London
- VIRGINIA TURBETT Punks 1979–1983
A massive Ziggy-era Bowie fan from rural West Sussex and budding snapper, in 1977 Virginia was asked by a good friend to photograph the Sex Pistols recording "Pretty Vacant" for Slash Magazine. “I had to go to a camera shop on Tottenham Court Rd to get them to change the film for me”. A year, and many punk gigs later, a chance meeting with a Sounds journalist on the Right To Work March led to a collaboration which lasted a few years – photographing Punk, Rock, Pop, Heavy Metal, Mods, New Romantics, skinheads, Two-Tone, Ska, Reggae and the fans, style and fashions of the time. Here are a selection of her best Punk photos, from the streets and gigs
- YAN MORVAN London Subculture Punk & Protest 1979-1981 *2 books*
French war photographer Yan Morvan arrived in London as Maggie Thatcher came to power and was instantly fascinated by the thriving punk/skin/mod subcultures which he strove to document. From The Observer: “The skinheads all tried to punch me in the face and steal my camera,” he says. “They didn’t like the French. But the punks were always friendly and funny. They liked being photographed.” His pictures – of the mosh pit at a Killing Joke gig or of rude boys chucking rocks at derelict factory buildings – capture a lot of the violent energy he encountered. “And always at the heart of it all,” he says, “was the incredible wild poetry of the bands and the music.”
Two books, London Punk & Protest is b&w, ranging from punks to the Notting Hill carnival and Police flashpoints therein, London Subculture is colour and encompasses Mods, punks, skins, Two-Tone, Killing Joke audience at the Music Machine and all the streetlife of London during those years
- DANIEL MEADOWS Factory Records 1979-80
As 1979 turned into 1980 Meadows found himself working at Granada TV in Manchester with Tony Wilson, whilst still photographing live gigs at night. Included here are photos from the Russell Club and more, with Buzzcocks, John Cooper-Clarke, ACR, Joy Division and Durutti Column. He also snapped Joy Division's recording with Martin Hannett
- SYD SHELTON Crowds 1977-1981
Syd Shelton took many photos during 1979-81 that captured the potency of RAR (Rock Against Racism), from Carnivals to gigs to demos. Many showed up in the music press of the day and 'Temporary Hoarding' newspaper. Here are the best of them: black and white, punk/skin/rudeboy
- SYD SHELTON Rock Against Racism Live 1977-1981
Between 1976 and 1981 Rock Against Racism and the youth of Britain unleashed the explosive rebel chemistry of Punk and Reggae bands in a five year festival of multi culturalism. Under the slogan ‘Love Music, Hate Racism’, Rock Against Racism took on the orthodoxy through 5 Carnivals, and over 500 gigs throughout the UK. In those five years the National Front went from a serious electoral threat into political oblivion (Syd Shelton 2022)
Great live photos of The Clash, The Ruts, Elvis Costello, The Beat, Undertones, The Specials, Au Pairs, Sham 69, Generation X, Barry Forde Band, Misty In Roots, Aswad, The Members and TRB
